Being Polite in the Poker Room

We all remember scenes from old movies where the tension in the poker room could be cut by a knife, words get thrown around and then a brawl breaks out over the out come of a game. You would think that this kind of tension doesn't exist in a virtual poker room but in fact the line is more easily crossed online because gamers are not sat in front of each other and therefore are not able to read the more subtle nuances of opponents' behaviour.

There are a few guide lines to note when playing poker online to keep the gaming polite and respectable. If you feel that someone is harassing you online, you must always write the web site with the name of the player in question, when the incident occurred, what specifically happened and the table it happened on. Reporting it doesn't mean that anything will happen but remember, if somebody if abusing you then they are probably doing it to somebody else as well and action eventually will be taken.

For yourself, it is imperative that you don't abuse or taunt other players. Of course there will be occasions where people are rude and they will get away with it, but do not get drawn into any kind of argument. Many web sites make notes of gamers who abuse the chat facility and block their ability to use it. If you think something you want to say might cross the line between innocent banter and rudeness, it is better to keep it to yourself and not say anything.

There are other things that must never be talked about, that over step the mark of correct poker etiquette such as talking about a hand while it's going on this is considered idiotic by many players especially if you are not playing in the hand or if you have more than one opponent in the hand. This kind of behaviour is considered bad manners and by many players it is considered cheating, so as a rule of thumb, do not discuss hands while they are in progress.

Poker is a great game and the community that it builds is one of the most valuable assets a player can have. By following a few simple rules, you will earn the respect of your fellow players and will prosper immensely from this community.
