Top Poker Players

Poker is one of the most well respected games of skill around and has a reputation for being a great leveller. Regular working class folk play the game, as do aristocrats, it doesn't matter what background you come from because when we play poker we are all on the same level.

If you take a look on the poker circuit there is a very interesting cross section of players to be found at the top of their field and one of the best examples of how small time players can rise to the giddy heights of poker pro is the story of Chris Moneymaker.

Chris Moneymaker was a Tennessee accountant who entered a $39 WSOP Satellite competition. He had to win this competition in order to win the coveted $10,000 buy in package to the World Series of Poker 2003 Main Event. Moneymaker, who had never played in a live casino poker tournament before, managed to knock out 60 other players to take home the $10,000 buy in package. When the final came around Moneymakers thoughts were to just do his best in the Texas Hold 'em event but after surviving the first day, he changed his strategy when he realized he was in with a chance. His stack began to grow and then a defining moment came when he made a crucial decision against fellow player Russ Boyd and thanks to his play, he won a place at the final table. Eventually the final event came around and Moneymaker found himself pitting his wits against Sammy Farha in a tough game that miraculously Moneymaker won and so, the story goes that a complete unknown, who entered a $39 satellite tournament walked away with $2.5 million and a WSOP bracelet to boot.

This story is a great example of how small time players who hone their skills at home with friends or by playing games like Texas Hold 'em on the internet can go on to win big bucks. More and more players who have played the game as a hobby are walking away from careers when they realise that there is more money to be made on the poker circuit for them than at work.
