Three Great Poker Movies
Poker is one of the most popular subjects for a movie and casinos are a favoured setting for a Hollywood blockbuster. There are many poker movies that can be attributed to viewers finding the inspiration to start playing the game.
One of the most inspirational poker movies that came out and started a major trend in people taking up the game was the 1998 film Rounders, starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton. Damon plays a law school student who swears off poker and turns his life around, only to get sucked back in when his so called friend Worm played by Norton creeps back into his life. Damon ends up deeply in debt to a Russian crime boss, played brilliantly by John Malkovich. This film is referred to by many as the catalyst for the huge boom in poker players in recent years.
The Cincinnati Kid is an all time classic poker movie that appeals to both film lovers and poker players alike. Steve McQueen is the ultimate hero, tough as old boots and as cool as a cucumber and of course he makes a mean poker player. McQueen plays Eric Stoner the main character in Norman Jewison's 1965 classic, who comes to New Orleans in the 1930s to prove himself at the poker table and with the ladies. He pits his wits against the reigning poker king of the town in a high-stake game while juggling the advances of two beauties.
Our third poker movie won't teach you anything about the game but is great fun to watch. Maverick, starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner is set in the olden day wild west and Mel Gibson's character Maverick, travels with the original maverick (James Garner) to the biggest tournament of the day, a winner takes all event. Along the way they meet a feisty female gambler (Jodie Foster) and get into all sorts of scrapes.
Poker movies are a great way to get into the spirit of poker playing. They often show another side of the game that most players don't experience and they are a great way to give gamers the confidence to try their luck in a more ambitious poker environment.
