Poker Hall of Fame

There have been many great poker players over the years that inspire gamers to take up poker and try to hone their skills to be the next World Series of Poker Main Event winner. We have compiled a list of some of the more notable poker champions for inspiration.

Amarillo Slim is a colourful character who won the 1972 W.S.O.P. main event. He made a three way deal with Doyle Brunson and Puggy Pearson that allowed him to win the title while the three players split the prize money. Amarillo helped establish gaming facilities around the world and while he was helping open a casino in Columbia he was kidnapped by people working for Pablo Escobar, in a case of mistaken identity, but he was eventually released.

Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson earn his nickname after an announcer read Doyle as Dolly and the name stuck. Brunson has the honour of having two Texas hold'em hands named after him. The first hand, a ten and a two of any suit, bears his name as he won the No Limit Hold 'em event at the World Series of Poker two years in a row with them in the seventies, completing a full house in both cases. Doyle is not entirely satisfied at being synonymous with a weak starting hand but in fact, in both 1976 and 1977, he was the underdog. The other hand called a "Doyle Brunson," is an Ace and Queen of any suit because, as he notes in his poker book he "never plays this hand."

Johnny Moss, sometimes referred to as the "Grand Old Man" because of his longevity and superior play and also famous for pulling guns on his opponents on occasion when he felt there may be something underhand going on in a poker game. A famous tale regarding Moss goes that he was elected champion among his peers but only received a silver cup. This is because each of the eight players voting regarded him as the best poker player and that it was only when the players were asked to vote for the second best player that Moss’s name emerged.
